Talitha Cumi (Little Girl, Arise)

Taking her by the hand he said to her, “Talitha cumi,” which means, “Little girl, I say to you, arise.” – Mark 5:41

I like to think it’s so simple. That God took this little girl by the hand on purpose and He, as perfect and as omniscient can be, knew exactly the kind of miracle she needed.

I like to think she knew when her name was called. And how could she not? When the Messiah Himself was calling out to her?

I’d wondered her name, what they called her in her life and if they called her anything different afterwards. And maybe when He looked on at her, lifeless, He loved her with the same everlasting love as in Jeremiah 31:3. And when He called her, “little girl,” maybe this was His endearing way of calling her out of darkness back to life again. I wonder.

And yet, God calls into the void and brings us back to life, doesn’t He? And what tomb have you been hiding behind, or grave have you remained buried under for so long you forgot you weren’t breathing? Suddenly nothing.

And you, how He calls to you. Your name with His voice, the sound of it on His lips. The same that voiced creation to life.

And you, how He seeks and longs for you. How He calls to you. He loves you.

Tell me, what grave or cave is dark enough to shut Him out? Or what tomb or darkness is too deep that His voice can’t reach?

Tell me, what mountain is too high for His presence?

I like to think it’s so simple, maybe as simple as bringing the world into existence with a Word, or as a baby first born.

Never easy, but as from nothing can suddenly come something, so maybe, what has been for so long can suddenly come to nothing.
